Diwali Celebrations

The residents enjoyed celebrating Diwali and celebrating many of our staffs culture and delicious food.

New Sun Shades

Work is in progress to get the two new sun umbrellas up ready for summer. Unfortunately this work has been delayed as when digging one of the foundations they accidently ruptured the sewage pipe. This work should be completed by the end of October.

COVID update

The department of health have advised that staff no longer require to wear face shields in aged care.

Footy Fever - Grand Final Day Celebrations

Residents were very excited to show off their footy day colours and celebrate the AFL.

Residents were dressed in their footy days finest to celebrate The AFL Grand final Day. A Tasty BBQ was enjoyed by all. Lucky the sun showed up so everyone was able to enjoy the day outside.

In House Shopping

Shopping direct will be at Holloway on 15th September at 2pm in the recreation room. They have a wide selection of goodies so look out for their flyers on the notice boards. You may also want to check if your loved one requires any money to go shopping on the day.

Special Birthday

Congratulations to Pearl in RSL1 House who will be 100 and Eunice RSL2 who will be 90 on the 2nd of September and to Gwen RSL1 who will be 101on the 24th September well done to all.

Yarraville Mouth Organ Band, Holloway Fun Games, Morning Melodies, Phil Golotta and Indian Independence Day!

Hello everyone,

Well July certainly turned out to be a challenging month with COVID and the restrictions it imposes. So we are all looking forward to August and having the freedom to attend activities, enjoy our friends and family and get back out into the community.

Highlights on the program for this month are:

The Yarraville Mouth Organ Band on Sunday 7th
The Holloway Fun Games (in the spirit of the Commonwealth Games on Monday 8th
Morning Melodies at Keilor east RSL on Tuesday 9th
Entertainment by Phil Golotta on Friday 12th
and celebrating Indian Independence Day on Monday 15th with a curry luncheon.

The Holloway Happy ladies are getting together for a buffet luncheon on 19th to include a Guest Speaker talk from Julie Spiteri.

All this alongside our regular musical activities with Lawrie Merrigan, a Bunnings Craft workshop, beauty therapies and spiritual services from Father Sebastian and Carol Coon.

Volunteering at Holloway

Due to COVID and other seasonal infections we had to cancel this event in July , fingers crossed we manage it on the 18th August. The volunteers afternoon tea is to we can say good bye to Lois Cameron and David and Laraine Barnes and hello to many new volunteers.

Holloways own local hero

Since we last wrote about Jack we are delighted to tell you that his hampers have arrived and that the residents in various activities have partaken of these goodies. Jack has also been interviewed by OPAN so look out for his interview in issue 4 of News for You their quarterly newsletter. Thank you Jack.

Fund raising

We are pleased to inform you that the stall at Milleara Mall raised $508.85 a very successful day enjoyed by all who attended. We must also thank Jack Cooney for his commercial skills in rounding up custom and promoting Holloway.

Special Birthday

Congratulations to Edna in Rotary House who will be 101 on the 5th August, a great achievement.

International Joke Day, Christmas in July, Volunteering, Fundraising and OPAN Local Hero Competition.

Hello everyone,

Winter is in full swing now and it’s a cold one this year. Here at Holloway we are keeping our spirits up by keeping busy and getting outdoors as much as we can when the sun is out.

We start July with international Joke day we are hoping the residents will come along and share some jokes with us. On Sunday 3rd July the Yarraville Mouth Organ Band are here for a concert always a good afternoon.

The Holloway Happy ladies are hosting a buffet luncheon to get together on 8th July.

Sunday 10th July a group of interested residents are off to St Bernard’s College for The Rotary Clubs annual Art Show this is a first for Holloway as in the past the venue has not been accessible by wheelchair or walking frame.

Morning Melodies at East Keilor RSL is on 12th and a group of residents will be attending this. The 14th July Bastille Day has us off to France through armchair travel.

Men’s shed are having a special luncheon on 22nd July cooked by Andrew Brown one of our new volunteers.

Then on 26th July we have a Christmas in July afternoon tea around the fire.

This is alongside all the regular activities, exercises, beauty therapy, spiritual services and musical sessions.

Volunteering at Holloway

On the 15th July we are having a volunteers afternoon tea to say good bye to Lois Cameron and David and Laraine Barnes and hello to many new volunteers. It is so good to be able to have volunteers back in the lifestyle program, they add a link with community and much richness by sharing their time and individual talents.

Holloways own local hero

We are delighted to announce that Mr Jack Cooney a resident in Kiwanis House has won OPAN’s Local Hero competition for his services to other residents. Jack regularly visits with his fellow residents, has a chat and sometimes acts as their advocate to provide information. Jack’s prize is a $100 hamper for him and a $400 for Holloway. Well done Jack.

Fund raising

Please join us on the 21st July at our fund raising stall at Milleara Mall 9am to 3pm. The Holloway community are very excited as this is our first stall since the onset of COVID.

Italian National Day, Milleara Mall Crafting Ladies, Shopping Direct and Much More!

Hello everyone,

We hope everyone is keeping well and warm the weather is certainly getting chilly and the winter wardrobe getting worn. However we have a lots of plans for June to keep our residents active and warm.

For Italian National Day we are off to Italy by armchair travel, which includes a taste of the nation.

The crafting ladies are getting back into action producing items for sale, we have a stall at Milleara Mall booked for 21st July. We will ask the men’s shed if they can make anything too.

We have a ballroom dance demonstration on June 10th followed by afternoon tea so a sort of tea dance. We hope this will be well supported and become a regular on the program with residents doing some dancing.

We are off to East Keilor RSL on 14th June for morning melodies and having Royal Bingo and quizzes on the afternoon to acknowledge the Queen’s birthday.

On 16th June we are welcoming and saying farewell to new and old Volunteers. The last two years have posed many challenges for this area of the lifestyle program hopefully the future is brighter and we can again interact with volunteers on a regular basis.

Shopping Direct will be here on 20th June for some in house retail therapy and Bunnings are back on 21st for a collage workshop.

Lawrie Merrigan has several music related sessions planned and community worship is on 23rd June.

Ann will be hosting individual house meetings over June for residents to have their say and address any issues.

A big thank goes to June Jones for her very generous contribution of a substantial gift for every resident at Holloway to cheer them up as we continue to function around COVID restrictions.

Workforce News

Holloway are proud to announce that Connie Micallef has been awarded a Pride of Workmanship Award by Keilor East Rotary club. The presentations were held on 23rd May at Aberfeldie Community Bowls Club and were attended by Connie’s close family. She was nominated by Bruce Cameron and received her award from Ben Carrol MP a lovely evening was had by all.

Important Reminders

As the weather gets cooler it is always a temptation for visitors to park within the facility. We are aware that parking is a challenge but unless you are picking up, dropping off or moving in/collecting belongings for a resident we ask that you park outside of the facility. We require to maintain access 24/7 for emergency vehicles and contractors completing maintenance repairs. If you do park in the circle please do not be offended if we ask you to move your vehicle.

Fund raising

The Biggest Morning and Biggest Afternoon teas raised $171.00 for the Cancer Council, a big thank you to everyone who contributed to this cause.

Mother's Day, Armchair Travel, International Nurses Day, Australia's Biggest Morning Tea and Much More!

We hope everyone is keeping well and managing to keep flexible as COVID is still affecting all our lives.

May sees us looking forward to celebrating Mothering Sunday with our many wonderful Mothers we will be delivering a gift on Friday 6th and Lawrie will join us on the afternoon for Music celebrating women.

Armchair travel this month sees us off to Hawaii which will bring new and old memories for many.

We plan to get back in the productive swing with a couple of knitting and sewing circles as we need to get some stock produced so we can book a stall at Milleara Mall. We have missed going to the Mall over COVID and hope we can get back there by the end of the year with lots of things to sell.

The Holloway Happy Ladies group are having a happy hour on Friday 13th May and the cancelled Thai Takeaway night from 29th April is rescheduled for this Friday.

The lovely ladies from Bunnings will be back with us on 24th May.

The men’s shed will be hosting their next men’s lunch on 27th May with Lawrie Merrigan and David Dippie as guests.

On the 31st we have fund raisers to make money for cancer research as we are hosting the biggest morning tea in RSL houses and the biggest afternoon tea in the recreation room. Sadly we still cannot invite families and friends to join us at these events but if you want to donate to the Cancer Council please see Tracy or Ann.

May is the month we show appreciation for all the workforce as the 12th May is International Nurses Day. On this day we host a special breakfast to say thank you to our wonderful team for the commitment they make to our residents and to Holloway Aged Care Services.

Fund raising

The Easter raffle was very successful with the Easter Bunny drawing the winning tickets. We had 24 prizes in all which is too many to fit on the News letter so here are the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners:

1st Prize went to Kylie Beaton

2nd Prize to Judy Dippie and

3rd Prize to Norma Sullivan

In total the raffle raised $334.50 which the Resident fund raising committee plan to use towards the purchase of Digital Orientation Clocks for all Houses.

Important Reminders

It's that time of the year again for Flu Vaccination and the clinical team have been working hard organizing consents and vaccines for residents and the workforce team. Please consider having the Flu vaccine if you are planning to visit Holloway it is another important way in which we can keep the Holloway Community safe.

The department of health have also recommended a fourth COVID vaccine for our residents and Tara and the clinical team are organizing this.

Easter Celebrations, Holloway Men's Shed, Armchair Travel, Morning Melodies and Anzac Services.

Hello everyone!

We hope everyone is keeping well.

As we move through April we have so much to look forward to. The Holloway Men’s Shed is busy sanding and staining our wooden outdoor furniture. Once this project is complete the men will be moving on to their next project with Brendan. We have a number of ideas in the pipe line and look forward to seeing what’s next. The Holloway music therapy sessions with Laurie continue and are going really well. We have four groups that meet with Laurie each week and use music to provide therapy in many different ways. We continue to engage with our residents individually during our meaningful time visits, these visits assist us to ensure our residents well being and individual needs are being met. Our Armchair Travel took off to Ireland in March with many residents coming on the trip. On our next adventure we will be traveling to Thailand and hope to have as many residents as possible travel with us.

The East Keilor RSL are hosting their Morning Melodies event on Tuesday 12th April. Residents who are interested to attend should advised the Lifestyle Team as numbers for this event is limited. There is a cost to each resident for this outing which will be determined on the day. From time to time we have last minute cancelations and we seek other residents to attend. On these occasions Lifestyle will cover the cost and be in contact with the appropriate person for reimbursement if the resident does not have any money with them. The Easter Bunny is very busy this time of year but has advised us he will be visiting our residents on Thursday 14th April at 10:30am. The Easter Bunny hopes to hop about the facility to see as many people as possible while here.

We will be holding our Anzac Service on Friday 22nd April at 10:30am. The service will be hosted by a representative from the East Keilor RSL and Holloway staff. We are very happy to have welcomed Bunnings Maribyrnong activity crew back onsite on Tuesday 19th to continue some fun and amazing projects with our residents.

All visitors to Holloway are required to show evidence of a negative rapid test prior to entry. Please attend reception for testing prior to visiting your loved one in accordance with the directives from the Department. Holloway residents and staff thankyou for your cooperation.

The Holloway Easter Raffle has some EGGcelent prizes, buy your tickets from reception. $2 each or 3 tickets for $5. Raffle will be drawn on Thursday 14th April.

Holloway erects a Bus Stop, Sun Smart Grant, Pancakes at RSL House and Harmony Day!

The Holloway Community wishes you well as we slowly transition from COVID restrictions to COVID preparedness. Not that we are seeing a lot of changes in aged care yet. However our March Calendar is pretty full and provides much to look forward too.

We will be making pancakes in RSL houses on Tuesday 1st. Welcoming Father Sebastian back for Mass on Thursday the 3rd. Then having a an evening at the Movies showing “No Time to Die” the latest Bond movie accompanied by Mocktails and Canapes, on Friday 6th . A Holloway Happy Ladies luncheon on Friday 11th and men’s shed and men’s luncheon on Friday 18th.

Some shopping opportunities when Shopping Direct visits on Tuesday15th and St Patrick’s Day celebrations on Thursday 17th.

The Yarraville Mouth Organ Band are booked for Sunday 20th March as they had to cancel for February fingers crossed they make it this time.

A Harmony Day themed lunch on Harmony Day Monday 21st then a Bunnings Craft Workshop on Tuesday 22nd. We are discussing Greek Independence Day on Friday 25th and throughout the month enjoying musical entertainment and music as a therapy over several dates with Lawrie Merrigan.

A Big Thank You To Keilor Rotary

Regular visitors to Holloway may have noticed the erection of a Bus Stop in the grounds opposite reception, kindly donated by Keilor Rotary.

This Bus Stop will be incorporated into our dementia support program to reduce restless agitation for those residents wanting to go home or to catch a bus.

Important Reminders

All visitors are required to show evidence of a negative rapid test prior to entry to Holloway. Also can we remind visitors that they are not to visit with their family member in communal areas that are used by all residents. We understand the inconvenience this may cause and thank everyone for their cooperation with this requirement.

Summer Heat

Some good news we have received the money from the Sun Smart Grant and have commissioned the work to erect two new Shade Umbrellas. They will provide more shade to the central area outside of the recreation room. The contractor awaits the necessary permits but hopes to commence the work soon. We have also purchased new outdoor furniture with a separate Sun Smart Grant to be installed once the new shade is erected.

Fund raising

The Holloway craft groups will be starting work on items for sale and we hope to be able to have a couple of stalls at Milleara Mall later in the year to facilitate the sale of these products.

As Easter approaches we will be conducting an Easter Raffle so watch this space for tickets going on sale.

Christmas Celebrations, Birthday Celebrations, Lifestyle Planning Month and Much More!

Hello everyone!

We hope you all had a safe and Happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

We would like to start the year with a big thankyou to all the residents, families and staff for concluding the year with such a magnificent turn out at our Picnic luncheon, Christmas Carols Evening and other festivities. The Holloway Community is something spectacular and we thank everyone for the support to the Lifestyle Team.

We hope you all enjoyed watching our Christmas trees go up, the festive decorations going around and of course our magnificent Christmas lights displays. A special mention to Santa visiting us on his motor bike, everyone was super excited seeing you ride in!

January is the Lifestyle planning month and we have been conducting an activity survey with our residents. A resident and lifestyle planning meeting was held on Thursday 20th to discuss the results. Our hope is to enable the residents to advise us of the types of things that they would like to include in the program, focusing on more resident initiated activities. Each week the Lifestyle Team will provide a planned activity sheet on each notice board around the home. The planned activity sheet will provide you with the name of the activity, the time in which it will be facilitated and also the venue it will take place. We hope to see as many residents attending the activities as possible and we invite everyone to keep giving the Lifestyle Team your suggestions to enhance our program further.

During the month of January our volunteers take a well deserved break and we look forward to enjoying some great times together in 2022.

February sees us celebrating the Chinese New Year of the Tiger and Valentines Day. After a long absence we invite the Yarraville Mouth Organ Band back to entertain us on 22nd February 2022 a much anticipated concert by our residents.

Lawrie continues to provide regular musical entertainment and this year he will also we offering his time to provide music therapy to small groups of residents. We have four music therapy groups planned and these will be ongoing over the year. Beauty therapy is also having a overhaul and will take place every Wednesday. Ann will join Sam in providing a range of therapies to include facials, nail care , ear care, reiki, therapeutic touch and spa

Celebrating Birthday’s

At Holloway, all of our residents are seen as individuals with specific needs relating to their cultural, social and lifestyle choices.

This of course, is reflected by the way in which they choose to celebrate their birthdays.

Holloway celebrate each resident’s birthday with a card on their special day.

Residents, Family and Friends are encouraged to liaise with the Lifestyle Team should they wish to arrange further birthday celebrations at Holloway.

Important Reminders

All visitors are required to show evidence of a negative rapid test prior to entry to Holloway. Each person is required to conduct a test every 72hours. All Holloway staff are also required to have these tests conducted as part of their work requirements. We understand the inconvenience this may cause and thank everyone for their cooperation with this requirement.

Summer Heat

As the weather heats up, Holloway aims to keep our facility cool and at the best possible temperature for our resident’s comfort. We ask that all our air conditioners be left at 22c, as well as windows & doors remaining closed to ensure efficiency. Icy poles and extra fluids are made available on days of extreme heat.

Fund raising

The Holloway Christmas Raffle raised an incredible $1052.10 Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets and congratulations to all the lucky winners.

The resident fund raising committee along side Ann have been successful applicants under the Andrews Labor Governments Shade Grants Program. Holloway is excited to advise the funding agreement and all necessary documentation to enable the shade umbrellas to go up have been returned and we are waiting on further advice as to when we can expect the work to start. Congratulation to all involved with the successful application.
